Booktrust supports Bedtime Reading
Booktrust are delighted to support families ‘reading at bedtime’ as part of National Family Learning Week 2010. Wednesday 2nd June is Family Week Story Time and throughout the week and continuing throughout the year, Booktrust has invited a wide range of partners to hold local Bedtime Reading events including Libraries, Home-Start Schemes, Health Partners and Children's Centres. If your family are not able to make it to an event, why not check out our website for ideas for bedtime reading that you can use at home.
Bedtime reading is an opportunity for all the family to get involved in the sheer joy and pleasure of reading aloud. On our website you will find lots of resources to help you to plan and promote an event along with suggested activities and fun ideas to make reading at bedtime a warm and wonderful experience; a celebration of stories, books and rhymes.
Resources to download will include:
- Beautiful Posters and flyers promoting Bedtime Reading to overprint with your event details.
- Tip sheets for parents with tips and ideas on sharing stories and rhymes with babies, toddlers, children who are starting to read and independent readers.
- Links to recommended books to read aloud.
- A list of books with a bedtime theme.
- Ideas for sharing rhymes and links to Bookstart Rhymetime Sheets.
- Activity ideas including drawing sheets, ideas for making your own book, and making a Twinkle Twinkle Little Star bookmark to encourage singing.
- Suggestions on how to involve health partners in promoting bedtime routines
- Case study detailing how the Oldham Bookstart scheme present a 30 minute bedtime programme for under 5s on Oldham Community Radio 99.7fm. It is called "Night Night, Sleep Tight" and is aimed at encouraging a good bedtime routine. The programme is broadcast every week night from 6.30-7.00p.m and is packed full of songs, rhymes, music and of course a bedtime story, not to mention great publicity for Bookstart events across the Borough.
