I CAN
As the children's communication charity we believe family life in the UK should be celebrated and supported. In the UK today, one in ten children experience some form of speech, language and communication difficulty. Mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings all play a crucial role in helping to support their child's speech, language and communication development which is why I CAN are delighted to endorse National Family Week.

I CAN is the children's communication charity. Communication is the essential 21st century life skill - the foundation on which children learn, achieve and make friends. I CAN works to develop speech, language and communication skills for all children with a particular focus on children who find communication hard.
One in ten children in the UK has speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). In some areas of the UK, upwards of 50% of children are arriving at primary school with poorly developed speech, language and communication skills.
I CAN recognises that parents/carers and families are a child's first and best teacher which is why we have created resources and services to ensure they are able to develop their children's communication skills and identify any problems.
These include:
Parent Point
I CAN's online resource for parents/carers and families providing knowledge, information and ideas about the development of children's communication skills and how to get the best support for children with SLCN. www.talkingpoint.org.uk/parentpoint
Talking Links
I CAN's database of essential health and educational organisations that can help children and young people with SLCN. www.talkingpoint.org.uk/talkinglinks
Chatter Matters
Making life easier for you and better for your child - a DVD resource developed by I CAN and Openreach, a BT group business, to encourage parents, siblings and grandparents to develop their children's communication skills by making the most of feeding, bathing and changing times with children before they start school.
